Lota
Biobío, Chile
Why visit Lota?
Lota is a historic coastal city of approximately 50,000 in the Biobío Region, 8 km south of Coronel. Founded in the 1850s around the Schwager coal mine, Lota was once the wealthiest city in Chile, built by the Cousiño family who controlled the largest coal mining operation in the Pacific. The city's decline after the mine closures left it with a haunting post-industrial landscape, but the preserved 19th-century buildings, the Pabellón 83 park, and the Chiflón del Diablo mine tour make it one of Chile's most compelling historical destinations.

What are the things to do?
Chiflón del Diablo: the most famous mine entrance — an underground mine that extends 1 km under the seabed. Daily guided tours (1 hr, CLP 6,000) include a descent into the mine.
Pabellón 83: the Cousiño family's palatial residence, now a cultural centre with a museum, gardens, and an art gallery. The most ornate mansion in southern Chile.
Parque Isidora Cousiño: the manicured gardens and parklands that surround the mansion, with walking paths, fountains, and an artificial lake.
Museo Histórico de Lota: located in the Pabellón 83, with exhibits on the mining history and the Cousiño family legacy.
Muelle de Lota: the old coal-loading pier, extending 300 m into the sea.
Mine tour: the descent into the Chiflón del Diablo is the essential Lota experience. Wear sturdy shoes and a jacket (10°C inside the mine).
Park walking: the Pabellón 83 grounds are beautiful for a leisurely afternoon stroll.
Photography: the contrast between the opulent Cousiño mansion and the industrial coal-working ruins is compelling.
Beach: Playa Blanca de Lota, 3 km south, is a sandy beach with views of the Isla Santa María.
