Talcahuano
Biobío, Chile
Why visit Talcahuano?
Talcahuano is a major port city and naval base in the Biobío Region, part of the Greater Concepción conurbation with a population of approximately 150,000. Founded in 1764, it is one of the most important naval ports in South America and home to the Chilean Navy's main base and shipyards. The city was heavily damaged by the 2010 earthquake and tsunami, but has since been substantially rebuilt.
Talcahuano sits on the Biobío Peninsula, with a natural deep-water harbour protected by the Quiriquina Island. The climate is Mediterranean with maritime influence — mild year-round (8–22°C) with a pronounced wet season May–August.
