Why visit Freirina?

Freirina is a small town of approximately 3,500 people in the Huasco Province of the Atacama Region, 25 km northwest of Vallenar. Founded in 1752, it is one of the oldest settlements in northern Chile and retains a charming colonial core with a church, tree-lined plaza, and adobe houses. The town was declared a Typical Zone (Zona Típica) for its preserved architecture.

How do you get there?

By Plane

Desierto de Atacama Airport (CPO) in Copiapó is 155 km north. Buses from Vallenar run 4–6 times daily (CLP 1,500, 25 min).

By Car / Road

From Vallenar, take Route C-498 north for 25 km (20 min). The road is paved.

Freirina's compact historic centre is walkable.

What are the things to do?

  • Iglesia Santa Rosa de Lima: a magnificent 19th-century adobe church with a white bell tower sitting on a stepped base — the town's centrepiece. A National Monument.

  • Plaza de Armas: a leafy square surrounded by original adobe houses, many with wooden balconies.

  • Casa de la Cultura: a restored colonial mansion with exhibits on local history.

  • Architectural photography: Freirina's adobe colonial architecture is among the best preserved in the Atacama Region.

  • Fiestas costumbristas: the town holds a traditional harvest celebration in March.
