Vallenar
Atacama, Chile
Why visit Vallenar?
Vallenar is the capital of the Huasco Province in the Atacama Region, with a population of approximately 52,000. Founded in 1789, it was originally a mining settlement named San Ambrosio de Vallenar. The city sits in the fertile Huasco Valley, one of the few permanently flowing rivers in the Atacama Desert, surrounded by irrigated orchards and vineyards that produce pisco grapes and olives.
The climate is desert Mediterranean — warm, dry summers (20–28°C Dec–Mar) and mild winters (8–18°C Jun–Aug), with an average of just 50 mm of rain per year. Vallenar is a gateway to the Llanos de Challe National Park, the Nevado Tres Cruces National Park, and the Pan de Azúcar coast.
