Llanos de Challe National Park

Atacama, Chile

Why visit Llanos de Challe National Park?

Llanos de Challe National Park protects 45,000 hectares of coastal desert at the northern edge of the Atacama Region, 50 km northwest of Vallenar. Established in 1998, the park is a refuge for the critically endangered Humboldt penguin and a unique loma (fog-zone) ecosystem of endemic cacti and bromeliads sustained by the camanchaca coastal fog.

The park's climate is extreme: less than 10 mm of rain per year, with temperatures moderated by the Humboldt Current (12–22°C). The landscape is a grid of hills cloaked in dense stands of copao cactus (Eulychnia iquiquensis), deep ravines cutting to the sea, and rocky coves with sea lion colonies.

How do you get there?

By Plane

Desierto de Atacama Airport (CPO) in Copiapó is 200 km north. From Vallenar, a bus to the Carrizal Bajo turnoff (45 min), then a taxi or hitchhiking to the park entrance.

By Car / Road

From Vallenar, take Route C-46 west toward Huasco, then turn north at the signed junction for Carrizal Bajo. The park entrance is 50 km from Vallenar on a gravel road (1 hr). A 4x4 is recommended in wet conditions.

The park has a single gravel road from the entrance to the coast, with spur trails on foot.

What are the things to do?

  • Playa Carrizal Bajo: a long, windswept beach with dark sand and pounding surf. The park's main day-use area.

  • Humboldt penguin colony: the penguins nest on offshore rocks accessible by boat from the beach. Boat tours are operated by local fishermen (CLP 25,000).

  • Cactus forest: the hills along the park road are covered in columnar cactus, some over 2 m tall.

  • Mirador del Guano: a viewpoint over a seabird colony on a rocky islet.

  • Seabird and penguin watching: the park's primary attraction. Best visited in December–February when chicks are present.

  • Hiking: the Sendero de la Camanchaca (3 km, 1.5 hr) climbs through the cactus zone to a coastal viewpoint.

  • Fishing: Carrizal Bajo is a working fishing cove — you can buy fresh reineta and albacore from the fishermen.

  • Photography: the contrast between the green cactus-covered hills and the deep blue Pacific is striking.
