Chanaral

Atacama, Chile

Why visit Chanaral?

Chañaral is a coastal city of approximately 12,000 people in the Atacama Region, 170 km north of Copiapó. Founded in 1836 as a mining port for copper and silver, Chañaral was historically one of the most important shipping points for Atacama's mineral wealth. The city sits on a narrow coastal shelf backed by barren desert mountains.

The climate is extremely dry — one of the driest coastal towns in the world, with less than 5 mm of annual rainfall. Temperatures are mild year-round (14–22°C) thanks to the Humboldt Current. Chañaral's primary attraction is the Pan de Azúcar National Park, which stretches north along the coast from the city's northern outskirts.

How do you get there?

By Plane

The nearest airport is Desierto de Atacama Airport (CPO) in Copiapó, 170 km south. Buses from Copiapó run daily (2.5 hr, CLP 6,000–8,000).

By Car / Road

Chañaral is on Route 1 (the coastal branch of the Pan-American Highway), 170 km north of Copiapó (2 hr) and 75 km north of Taltal (1 hr). The road is paved and in good condition.

The city centre is small and walkable. The main street, Avenida Merino Jarpa, runs parallel to the bay. For the national park, a vehicle is essential.

What are the things to do?

  • Plaza de Armas: a simple coastal square with palm trees and a monument to the miners.

  • Museo de Chañaral: a small museum with exhibits on mining history, local paleontology (fossilised marine reptiles), and the region's flora.

  • Iglesia de Chañaral: a 19th-century wooden church with a distinctive blue and white colour scheme.

  • Costanera El Palito: a short seafront promenade popular for sunset.

  • Muelle Fiscal: the old iron pier, built in the 1860s for mineral loading — a National Monument.

  • Pan de Azúcar National Park: the northern half of the park is accessible from Chañaral. The park's visitor centre, the El Mirador trail, and the pristine Playa Blanca are all within 15 km north of town.

  • Humboldt Penguin colony: the Isla Pan de Azúcar, 12 km north, holds one of the largest Humboldt penguin colonies in South America. Boat tours run from the park's beach.

  • Surfing: the waves at Playa Blanca and nearby Punta del Viento are consistent.

  • Whale watching: humpback whales visit the bay between October and March. Local boats operate tours from the pier (CLP 35,000 per person).

  • Fishing: the bay is a popular shore-fishing spot; corvina and albacore are common.
