General Lagos
Arica y Parinacota, Chile
Why visit General Lagos?
General Lagos is a high-altitude Andean municipality in the Arica y Parinacota Region, situated on the altiplano near the border with Peru and Bolivia. Named after the 19th-century Chilean president Pedro Lagos, the municipality covers the extreme northeastern corner of Chile, with its main settlement in the village of Visviri (3,600 m elevation).
Visviri is famous as the tripoint where the borders of Chile, Peru, and Bolivia meet — one of the tripoints with the most unusual configuration in South America. The area is inhabited mostly by Aymara indigenous communities who herd llamas and alpacas, practice terraced agriculture, and maintain traditional weaving and textile crafts. The climate is cold and dry, with temperatures dropping well below freezing at night year-round. Days in summer (Nov–Mar) reach 12–18°C; winter (May–Aug) sees daytime highs of only 6–10°C.

By Plane
Chacalluta International Airport (ARI) in Arica is 200 km west. From Arica, buses run to Visviri twice daily (CLP 8,000–10,000, 4 hr).
By Car / Road
From Arica, take Route 11 east toward the Paso Chungará border crossing. After 180 km, turn right at the signed junction for Visviri (Route 41). The road is fully paved as far as Putre, then gravel for the last 30 km to Visviri. A 4x4 is not essential but high clearance is recommended.
Visviri is small enough to walk. For exploring the surrounding altiplano, visit Lake Chilcaya, or the border markers, you will need a vehicle or a guided tour. Local taxis can be hired for CLP 30,000–50,000 per half-day.
What are the things to do?
Triple Frontera (Tripoint): the junction of the Chilean, Peruvian, and Bolivian borders, marked by three obelisks painted in each country's colours. A unique photo opportunity and the main reason most travellers visit.
Visviri town square: a simple plaza with an Aymara-style church, a monument to General Lagos, and a small market.
Lake Chilcaya (Lago de Chilcaya): a scenic high-altitude lake 10 km northeast of Visviri, home to flamingos, Andean geese, and vicuña.
Aymara archaeological sites: the hills around Visviri contain pre-Columbian terraces, chullpa (funerary) towers, and petroglyphs, indicating continuous occupation for over 2,000 years.
Tripoint visit: stand in three countries at once. There is a small entry fee (CLP 2,000) collected by local community members. The border posts are open 09:00–18:00.
Weaving workshops: local Aymara women run weaving demonstrations and sell handmade textiles — rugs, ponchos, and hats made from llama and alpaca wool. Ask at the municipality office.
Hiking the altiplano: the terrain around Visviri is wide-open and atmospheric. Ask locally about safe routes toward Lake Chilcaya.
Wildlife watching: look for vizcacha (Andean rabbit-like rodents) on the rocky slopes, flamingos in the lagoons, and herds of vicuña on the plains.
Stargazing: at 3,600 m with no light pollution, the night sky is spectacular.

- Cocinería Doña Rosa (budget): a family-run kitchen in a private home offering Aymara home cooking — ask around in the square for directions.
- Bring snacks and water from Putre or Arica — options in Visviri are very limited.
Where to drink?
Tap water in Visviri is from mountain sources — it is generally safe but may cause stomach upset for those not accustomed to high-altitude water. Bottled water is available at the store. The local hot drink is mate de coca (coca tea), widely consumed to combat altitude sickness.
