Kangalam

Kangalam is a lakeside village in northern Lac province, located on the north-eastern shore of Lake Chad. The community combines fishing from the lake with livestock herding in the surrounding grasslands. The village is isolated but the lake provides a reliable source of food and transport via pirogue. Life here has continued in the same way for generations: men fish, women preserve the catch, and children learn the skills of the lake from their parents.

Reached by unpaved track from Ngouri heading north, or by pirogue along the shore. A 4×4 is recommended for the land route.

Walking along the shoreline, or hire a pirogue for lake travel.

• Cattle and goat herds grazing near the lake.

• Take a pirogue trip to explore the lake.

• Visit local herders and learn about their seasonal movements.

• Birdwatching for waterbirds.
