Wum

Wum is the capital of Menchum Division in Cameroon's North-West Region and the third-largest town in the region, sitting on a plateau at roughly 1,100 m near the edge of the western highlands. It sits on the northwestern arc of the Grassfields Ring Road, in a volcanic landscape dotted with small crater lakes — Lake Wum lies about 3 km northwest of town, one of several such lakes within 15 km. Lake Nyos, the crater lake where a 1986 limnic (CO₂) eruption killed nearly 2,000 people, lies roughly 25 km to the east; it remains a subject of ongoing monitoring. Like the rest of the North-West Region, Wum has been affected by the Anglophone Crisis, the armed conflict between government forces and separatist fighters running since 2017; travellers should check the current security situation before planning a visit.

By Car / Road

Wum sits on the North-West Region's Ring Road; public transport runs along it but becomes infrequent past Wum. Confirm current road and security conditions locally before travelling.
