Safane

Boucle du Mouhoun, Burkina Faso

Why visit Safane?

Safané is a rural commune and department capital in Mouhoun Province, located within the Boucle du Mouhoun region of western Burkina Faso. Situated along Regional Road R29, the town sits roughly 50 km south of the provincial capital Dédougou and 60 km northwest of Boromo. The town population numbers around 7,500 residents, while the surrounding department comprises over 62,000 inhabitants distributed across 40 agricultural villages. Local livelihood depends primarily on subsistence farming of millet, sorghum, maize, and yams, supplemented by cotton growing and livestock rearing.

The resident community belongs predominantly to the Bwaba ethnic group, who maintain autonomous village social structures, traditional earth-and-thatch compound architecture, and mask-making customs. Safané serves as an active regional center for shea butter extraction. Local women collect nuts from native shea trees (Vitellaria paradoxa), organizing into village cooperatives to roast, crush, and grind kernels into unrefined butter for cooking, cosmetic use, and regional trade.

The surrounding landscape consists of wooded Sahelian savanna and shea parklands. Temperatures remain warm to hot year-round. The dry season runs from October to May, marked by dry northeast Harmattan winds from December through February and peak temperatures exceeding 40°C (104°F) in April and May. The wet season spans June to September, delivering 500 to 800 mm of rainfall that supports crops but creates muddy travel conditions along unpaved regional roads.
