About Sozopol

Sozopol (Bulgarian: Созопол) is a historic town on the Black Sea coast of Bulgaria. One of the oldest settlements on the Bulgarian coast, it was founded as a Greek colony called Apollonia in the 7th century BCE. Sozopol is divided into an old town on a small peninsula and a new town on the mainland. It is known for its charming old town with wooden houses, narrow cobbled streets, and beautiful beaches.

How to reach

By Plane

The nearest airport is Burgas Airport (BOJ IATA), about 40 km north. From the airport, take a bus to Burgas bus station and then a connecting bus to Sozopol. Taxis are also available.

By Train

There is no train to Sozopol. The nearest railway station is in Burgas. From Burgas, frequent buses run to Sozopol.

By Car / Road

Sozopol is a 35 km drive from Burgas along the coastal Road 99. The road follows the coast and offers scenic views. Parking in the old town is limited.

Sozopol is a small town, so walking is the best way to get around. The old town is compact and best explored on foot. Taxis are available and are often parked near the beach. Agree on the fare before starting your trip and don't be afraid to haggle, as prices are often marked up for tourists.

Things to do

The old town features an ancient church, an amphitheatre, wooden Revival-era houses, and a picturesque port. The islands of Saint Ivan and Saint Peter are visible from the coast and make for interesting boat trips. Walk along the port and explore the narrow streets lined with traditional Bulgarian architecture.

Swim at the beaches around the old town. For a quieter spot, there is a rocky area by the sea near the old school where you can sunbathe and swim. Try a quad bike safari around the village of Marinka for adventure. Attend the Apollonia Festival of Arts in early September, a well-known cultural event.

Food & Dining

There are many restaurants in both the old and new town. The restaurant Kirik near the marine base offers seafood specialities with panoramic views — try their marinated fish, roasted mackerel with lemon and fennel, or octopus salad. Many restaurants serve Bulgarian and Mediterranean cuisine.

Cafes & Nightlife

The waterfront has numerous cafes and bars. Bulgarian wines and beers are widely available. The old town offers a charming setting for evening drinks.

The best place to stay is the old town, where you'll feel immersed in the cultural side of Sozopol. Guesthouses and small hotels are available. Camping around the city is popular among young travellers and backpackers.
