About Bansko

Bansko is a mountain and ski resort in southwest Bulgaria, under the slopes of the Pirin Mountains. It is the largest ski resort in the Balkans. The town lies at 925 m above sea level on the southern edge of the Razlog Valley, at the meeting point of three mountain ranges: Rila and Pirin to the west and the Rhodope Mountains to the east. Its permanent population is about 9,000 (2020). While Bansko has been a ski resort since the Communist era, a boom in international visitors developed in the 2000s, and since the 2010s the town has also attracted many digital nomads.

Things to do

The Old Town preserves traditional Bulgarian architecture with narrow cobbled streets and charming stone buildings. The House of Velyan features impressive frescoes and wood-carved ceilings. The Holy Trinity Church is a fine example of Bulgarian National Revival church architecture with a beautiful interior.

Skiing is the main draw in winter — Bansko has 14 operating lifts and is suited mainly to beginners and intermediates. The gondola runs from 08:30 to 17:00. Hiking in the Pirin Mountains is excellent in summer; Mount Vihren, the second-highest peak in Bulgaria, is reachable in a day's walk. Hot springs are found near the town.
