Porto de Galinhas

Pernambuco, Brazil

About Porto de Galinhas

Porto de Galinhas is a coastal beach town in the municipality of Ipojuca, on the southern coast of Pernambuco in Brazil's Northeast. It belongs to the Grande Recife region and has grown from a quiet fishing village into one of the most popular beach destinations in the Northeast, especially as a weekend getaway for people from nearby Recife. Despite the development, it retains a relaxed, small-town feel centred on a walkable beachfront core.

The town's signature attraction is its reefs. At very low tide — for roughly two hours a day — the offshore reefs trap seawater into natural pools (piscinas naturais) full of fish, which visitors reach by jangada (a traditional local sailing raft). The surrounding coast is genuinely beautiful, and the area's appeal runs from cozy pousadas to five-star resorts. Just south, the smaller, quieter town of Maracaípe is an easy walk away and shouldn't be missed.

The best beach experiences depend on the tides and the moon: the natural pools only appear at low tide, so it's worth asking at a travel agency or tourism information centre for the recommended days and hours before planning a reef visit. If you're lucky, you may witness a sea-turtle hatching at full moon in midsummer — plan a full-moon stay if that appeals.

By car, Porto de Galinhas is about 80 km from Recife (via the BR-101 and PE-60 roads). Approximate distances to other cities: Natal ~330 km, Salvador ~800 km, Rio de Janeiro ~2,300 km, and São Paulo ~2,800 km.

By bus: Two Cruzeiro bus lines run from Recife to "Porto," as locals call it.

  • The standard line takes around 2 to 2½ hours, stops at the airport and several points in Recife, costs R$12.50 (April 2021), and has no air-conditioning — if it's full, you may have to stand.
  • Line 195 is also run by Cruzeiro, with air-conditioning, better seats, and a semi-express route. It costs R$18.25 (April 2021) and leaves hourly from Cais de Santa Rita in Recife.

The bus terminal in Porto de Galinhas is next to the gas station (o posto) at the end of Rua de Esperança, the town's main street.

The town is small and easily navigable on foot. Uber and 99Taxi both work here (as of December 2019); a typical 10-minute trip costs about R$6.

Very frequent vans run between Porto de Galinhas and Maracaípe for R$3.50.

Buggies are available for rent with or without a driver — a popular and flexible alternative to conventional car rental, and the classic way to explore the surrounding beaches.

Things to do

  • Piscinas naturais (natural pools) — Gaps in the reef where seawater forms natural ponds full of fish, reached by jangada raft. The reefs are only accessible at very low tide, for about two hours a day, so check recommended days and hours locally before going. This is the town's signature sight.

  • Maracaípe — The smaller, quieter town just south, within walking distance along the beach; good for watching surfers and escaping the weekend crowds.

  • Pontal do Maracaípe — A beach point where local kitesurfers gather; classes are available for the more adventurous.

  • Praia dos Carneiros — A stunning white-sand, crystal-clear-water beach south of Porto de Galinhas, near Tamandaré; reachable by boat trip.

  • Ilha de Santo Aleixo — A Caribbean-style island off Toquinho beach (south of town), ideal for snorkelling and swimming. The excursion takes up to about 6 hours.

  • Recanto do Cavalo Marinho — A protected seahorse-breeding area south of Maracaípe, reachable by jangada.

  • Snorkel the Piscinas Naturais — Snorkel the reef gaps where small fish gather; R$30 for 45 minutes, with snorkel gear provided. Tickets are available at the booth near Giroskka Bar in Praça Central. Fun for beginners, though seasoned snorkellers may find the marine life limited.

  • Buggy tours — Run by Assoc. Prop. e Condutores de Bugue (☏ +55 81 3552-1930); a great way to reach the beaches up and down the coast.

  • Lagoon boat trips — Take a small boat out on the lagoon and swim with the fish; bring some kind of footwear, as the rocks are sharp.

  • Kitesurfing — Watch or learn at Pontal do Maracaípe.

  • Catamaran tripsCatamarã Cavalo Marinho (☏ +55 81 3552-2180 / +55 81 8811-7393); hire a boat to Ilha de Santo Aleixo for snorkelling and swimming.

  • Scuba divingMergulhão Scuba offers hotel pickup (within about a 6-mile radius) and dives to the natural reefs and ponds.

  • Project Hippocampus — A seahorse-focused attraction at Pontal de Maracaípe.

  • Beach and surf watching — Walk to Maracaípe and watch the surfers, or simply find a spot on the beach, order shrimp and beer, and relax.

Splurge

  • Beijupirá — Expensive but excellent. The speciality is beijupirá (filet of cobia); lobster and shrimp dishes are also served, with menus in English, German, Italian, and Finnish.

Cafes & Nightlife

Many bars and restaurants serve the weekend party crowd, and it isn't hard to find a place for a drink along the beach, on either of the two main roads, or at the night-time stands where the two main roads meet near the beach. On weekend evenings you may catch — or join — an impromptu drum circle at this intersection.

Right on the shore, carts sell piña colada served in a fresh pineapple for R$20. Tap water safety in Brazil is variable, so stick to bottled or filtered water.

Places to Stay

Accommodation ranges from cozy pousadas to top-quality five-star resorts (such as Nanai and Summerville). Note that the city centre — especially around the Pracinha — gets very loud at weekends, with street parties and bands playing in front of the pousadas (Pousada Benedita and Pousada Marakatu are right by the action). Avoid being led to a hotel by touts, as you'll be quoted an inflated price.

Budget

  • Pousada Benedita — Rua da Esperança 85 (centre, 60 m from the main beach), ☏ +55 81 3552-1343. Cheap, clean little hotel; doubles R$80–150. Check-in 12:00, check-out 12:00.
  • City-centre pousadas generally start around R$50.

Mid-range

  • Pousada Sky Beach Flat — Rua Merepe III, Quadra 5C, ☏ +55 81 3552-2846. Single and double studios with A/C, balcony, fridge, and microwave; large pool and excellent breakfast. Check-in 14:00. (Some daytime construction noise and patchy Wi-Fi at peak hours, as of Dec 2019.)
  • Pousada Tabapitanga — Pontal da Praia do Cupe. Good for couples with or without kids; has a restaurant (order the lobster).

Upscale

  • Hotel Pontal de Ocaporã — Sítio Costa Tropicana, Lote 182, ☏ +55 81 3552-5000. The first hotel in Porto de Galinhas, literally on the beach — one of the region's safest for swimming and great for kids, with dedicated children's staff.
  • Nanai and Summerville — Five-star resorts for those wanting a full-service beach stay.

What to buy

The shops in the pedestrian zone in the centre of town offer local crafts, clothing, and beach equipment. The pedestrianised calçadão and the streets around the Pracinha are the main shopping area.

There are ATMs from 24Horas and Caixa, but none from Bradesco — plan your cash withdrawals accordingly.

Go next

  • Maracaípe (~3 km / short van ride or beach walk) — A quieter beach town just south, good for surfers and escaping the noise.
  • Recife (~80 km / ~2 hrs by bus) — The Pernambuco state capital and regional hub.
