About Presidente Figueiredo
Presidente Figueiredo is a small municipality in Amazonas state, approximately 175 km north of Manaus along the BR-174 highway. Known as the "City of Waterfalls" (Cidade das Cachoeiras), it has earned a reputation as one of the most accessible eco-adventure destinations from the Amazonian capital. The municipality was founded in 1981 and named after João Baptista de Figueiredo Tenreiro Aranha (1798–1861), the first president of the Province of Amazonas.
The region's natural landscape is characterized by dense tropical rainforest, crystal-clear rivers, dramatic waterfalls, and limestone caves. The climate is hot and humid year-round, with average temperatures between 25°C and 35°C. The rainy season (December–May) brings heavier rainfall but also more impressive waterfalls, while the drier months (June–November) offer better conditions for hiking and cave exploration. The Balbina Reservoir, a large artificial lake created in the 1980s, adds a unique aquatic dimension to the area's attractions.
Presidente Figueiredo serves as a gateway to the Amazonian interior without requiring the deep-jungle expeditions typical of more remote destinations. Its proximity to Manaus makes it popular for day trips and weekend getaways, though staying overnight allows visitors to explore the numerous waterfalls and caves at a more relaxed pace.
