About Travnik
Travnik is a historic town in central Bosnia, best known as the seat of the Ottoman vezirs (governors) between 1699 and 1850, when it served as the capital of the Bosnia Eyalet. This period left the town with a profusion of colourful mosques—most famously the Šarena Džamija (Colourful Mosque)—and a rich Ottoman architectural heritage. The town sits in the Lašva Valley at the foot of Mount Vlašić, a popular ski destination. Travnik is also famous in Bosnia for its Ćevapi, claimed by locals to be the best in the country. It was the birthplace of Ivo Andrić, the Nobel Prize-winning author of The Bridge on the Drina.
The climate is continental: warm summers and cold, snowy winters. The Plava Voda (Blue Water) spring is a landmark in the old town, where water emerges from a rock face into a drinking fountain. The town is divided into the old Ottoman quarter (Čaršija) around the Plava Voda and the newer Austro-Hungarian section.
