Mono

Mono is a department in southwestern Benin, stretching from the coastal lagoon system inland toward the Togolese border. The departmental capital Lokossa is a busy market town. Mono's coastal zone includes Grand-Popo, one of Benin's most popular beach destinations, with lagoon boat trips, relaxed beach resorts, and the Bouche du Roi (the mouth of the Mono River). Inland, the department is agricultural with palm groves and maize fields. The Mono River forms the border with Togo.

November to February is the best time — dry and mild. Grand-Popo is pleasant year-round, though rainier from April to October. The rainy seasons (April–July, September–October) can make unpaved roads difficult.

The RNIE1 highway connects Lokossa and Grand-Popo with Cotonou. Bush taxis and minibuses run regularly. Athiémè and Bopa are accessible via paved and unpaved roads. The Grand-Popo lagoon is navigable by pirogue.

Seafood is abundant in Grand-Popo: grilled fish, crab, prawns, and lobster. Inland, pâte (maize dough) with peanut or palm nut sauce, grilled chicken, and local vegetables dominate.

The Grand-Popo area is known for its Vodun heritage and the annual Fête de la Mer (Sea Festival). The Bouche du Roi is a sacred site in Vodun tradition. The Djegbadji festival in Grand-Popo celebrates local history.
