About Monkey River Town
Monkey River Town is a small Creole fishing village on the southern Caribbean coast of Belize's Toledo District, sitting at the mouth of the Monkey River. Once a thriving centre for the banana trade and lumber industry in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the village has shrunk to a few hundred residents and now makes its living primarily from fishing and ecotourism. Its main draw is the Monkey River boat tour — a trip upriver through dense riparian forest to observe one of the healthiest populations of black howler monkeys (Alouatta pigra) in Central America, along with crocodiles, manatees, iguanas, and prolific birdlife.
The village itself is a single lane of wooden houses stretching along the riverbank, with no roads connecting it to the rest of Belize — access is by boat only. There are no cars, no banks, and no ATMs; life runs on fishing time and the rhythms of the river. The community is predominantly Creole (English-speaking), with a friendly, unhurried character. The climate is tropical: the dry season (February to May) offers the best conditions for river trips (calmer water, easier wildlife spotting), while the wet season (June to January) brings heavy rains that can flood trails and make the river murky. The Atlantic hurricane season peaks August–October.

By Train
By Car / Road
Monkey River Town is accessible only by boat. The most common departure point is from a dock along the Southern Highway near the village of Placencia or directly from Punta Gorda (about 1 hour south by boat). Tour operators in PG, Placencia, and Dangriga run day trips that include the boat ride and a guided river walk. From PG, arrange a boat through your lodge or at the PG municipal pier (BZ$100–200 return, depending on group size). The boat ride from the highway junction takes about 30 minutes along the coast and up the Monkey River.
The village is small enough to explore on foot in 15 minutes. The main activity is the guided river tour, which is done by boat with a local guide. Walking along the riverbank and the single village lane is the extent of local exploration. There are no vehicles or roads.
Things to do
Monkey River and its howler monkeys — The star attraction. Guided boat trips up the Monkey River pass through gallery forest where troops of black howler monkeys lounge in the canopy, often at eye level. Crocodiles, iguanas, and turtles are regularly spotted.
Birdlife along the river — The riparian forest supports dozens of species including toucans, parrots, herons, kingfishers, and raptors. Early morning tours are best for birding.
Manatee sightings — The river mouth and coastal waters near Monkey River are habitat for the West Indian manatee; sightings are common but not guaranteed.
The village itself — A snapshot of traditional Creole fishing life: colourful wooden houses, fishing boats pulled up on the bank, children playing, and the sound of the forest beyond.
Howler monkey river tour — The signature experience: a 2–3 hour guided boat trip up the Monkey River with a local naturalist guide. Guides are skilled at locating monkey troops and other wildlife. Tours typically cost BZ$50–80 per person.
River kayaking — Paddle upriver at your own pace; kayaks can sometimes be hired locally or arranged through PG lodges.
Fishing — The river mouth and offshore waters offer tarpon, snook, barracuda, and snapper. Local fishermen can arrange trips.
Nature walks — Short guided walks along the riverbank and through the fringing forest to observe insects, reptiles, and medicinal plants.
