About Calcutta
Calcutta is a small village in the Corozal District of northern Belize. The community is predominantly East Indian and Mestizo, a reflection of Belize's diverse ethnic mosaic. The village's name, like several other "Calcutta" place names across the Caribbean and Central America, derives from the Indian labourers who were brought to the region during the colonial era. Agriculture is the primary livelihood, with sugar cane and subsistence farming dominating the local economy.
The village sits on the flat northern Belizean lowlands, surrounded by sugar cane fields and patches of tropical forest. The climate is tropical, with a dry season from February to May and a wet season from June to November. Calcutta is a quiet, off-the-beaten-path community with no tourist infrastructure.
