Why visit Bastogne?
Bastogne (Dutch: Bastenaken, German: Bastnach) is a city in the Belgian province of Luxembourg, Wallonia. The town is world-famous for its role in the Battle of the Bulge during World War II, when American forces held the town against a German siege in December 1944. The famous reply "NUTS!" by General McAuliffe to the German surrender demand has become legendary.
Today, Bastogne is a pilgrimage site for military history enthusiasts and a gateway to the Ardennes region. The town is surrounded by dense forests, rolling hills, and picturesque villages, making it a great base for hiking and cycling. The climate is continental, with cold winters (outdoor activities better from spring to autumn). The anniversary commemorations in December are particularly poignant.
