Charleroi

Why visit Charleroi?
Charleroi is the largest city in Wallonia by population and the economic heart of the former industrial Sillon industriel. Located on the river Sambre, Charleroi has undergone a significant transformation from its steel and coal-mining past to a vibrant cultural centre with a growing reputation for architecture, street art, and contemporary creativity.
The city is named after King Charles II of Spain (Charleroi means "King Charles" in French) and grew explosively during the Industrial Revolution. While it may lack the medieval charm of other Belgian cities, Charleroi offers fascinating industrial heritage, world-class museums, and a dynamic urban energy. The surrounding region offers the Bois du Cazier mining site and the scenic landscapes of the Sambre valley. The climate is temperate maritime. Charleroi's main advantage for travellers is its major budget airport.
