About Saint-Gilles
Saint-Gilles (Sint-Gillis in Dutch) is a vibrant, central municipality of the Brussels-Capital Region, located just south of the City of Brussels. With roughly 50,000 inhabitants, it is one of the most densely populated and culturally diverse communes in Belgium. Saint-Gilles is renowned for its extraordinary concentration of Art Nouveau architecture, including masterpieces by Victor Horta and Paul Hankar, making it a pilgrimage destination for architecture enthusiasts. The municipality grew rapidly during the late 19th and early 20th centuries as Brussels expanded beyond its historic core, attracting a mix of working-class families, artisans, and a growing immigrant population.
Today, Saint-Gilles pulses with a bohemian, creative energy. The area around Rue de la Paroisse and the Saint-Gilles Market Square is packed with independent bookshops, vinyl stores, craft breweries, and a thriving café culture. The municipality is also home to the Brussels-Midi (Brussel-Zuid) railway station, the city's main international transport hub, which brings a constant flow of travellers and gives the neighbourhood a distinctly cosmopolitan feel. The Parvis de Saint-Gilles (Sint-Gillisvoorplein) is the social heart of the commune, surrounded by terraced cafés and restaurants serving cuisines from around the world.
Saint-Gilles enjoys a temperate oceanic climate with mild winters (average 3°C in January) and pleasant summers (average 18°C in July). Late spring (May–June) and early autumn (September–October) offer the most comfortable conditions for exploring on foot. The municipality is compact and walks easily from end to end in about 30 minutes.
