Why visit Ixelles?
Ixelles (Elsene in Dutch) is one of Brussels' most vibrant, culturally rich, and densely populated municipalities. Straddling the eastern edge of the historic city centre, Ixelles is known for its stunning Art Nouveau architecture, the twin Ixelles Ponds (Étangs d'Ixelles / Vijvers van Elsene), the dynamic Flagey arts complex, and the Matongé quarter — the heart of Brussels' Central African community. It is also home to the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), the Solbosch campus, and the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), making it the city's student and intellectual hub. The municipality's elegant squares — Place Eugène Flagey, Place Saint-Boniface, Place Fernand Cocq — are filled with café terraces, and the Chaussée d'Ixelles and Rue Lesbroussart are excellent shopping and dining strips. Ixelles is the most popular residential area for expats and young professionals, giving it a cosmopolitan, energetic atmosphere. Visit May–September for the best terrace weather.

By Plane
Brussels Airport (BRU) is 15 km east; take a train to Brussels-Luxembourg (15 min) then bus 95 or walk 10 min into Ixelles. Charleroi Airport (CRL) shuttle to Brussels-Midi (1 hr, €16), then tram line 81 to Flagey (20 min).
By Train
The main stations serving Ixelles are Brussels-Luxembourg (line 161, domestic IC) and Brussels-Midi (high-speed and domestic). Both are within 15 minutes' walk or a short tram ride from most of Ixelles.
By Car / Road
The boulevards Général Jacques and de la Plaine run along Ixelles' border with Etterbeek. The Bois de la Cambre and Forêt de Soignes are at the southern tip. Parking is expensive and scarce; a resident permit zone covers most streets. The A4/E411 highway to Namur is 5 km south.
Ixelles is well connected by trams (lines 7, 8, 25, 81, 93), buses (38, 71, 95, 59), and metro lines 1 and 5 (stations: Trône, Porte de Namur, Louise). The commune is compact and walkable — Flagey to the Ixelles Ponds is 10 minutes, to Matongé 15 minutes. Villo! bike stations are numerous. Uber/Bolt operate. A Go Pass is useful for frequent travellers.
