Why visit Koekelberg?
Koekelberg is a small, primarily residential municipality in the western part of the Brussels-Capital Region, best known for the gigantic Art Deco Basilica of the Sacred Heart (Basilique Nationale du Sacré-Cœur), which dominates the Brussels skyline. With a population of around 22,000 on just 1.2 km², Koekelberg is one of the smallest and most densely built-up communes. The basilica — one of the world's ten largest churches — is the overwhelming reason to visit, offering a panoramic terrace from its copper-green dome. The municipality also has a small human-interest museum (the Brussels Beer Museum, co-located in the basilica) and is close to the Heysel/Atomium complex. The rest of Koekelberg is quiet residential streets with modest houses and apartments. Best visited as part of a Heysel-Atomium-Basilica circuit.
