Etterbeek

Bruxelles-Capitale, Région de, Belgium

Why visit Etterbeek?

Etterbeek is a central, densely populated municipality located between the historic city centre and the European Quarter. It is one of the smaller Brussels communes (3.2 km²) but strategically positioned adjacent to the Parc du Cinquantenaire and the EU institutions on the Schuman roundabout. Etterbeek has a mixed character: parts of it are leafy and residential (around the Chaussée Saint-Pierre and Avenue d'Auderghem), while the Place Jourdan area is renowned for its excellent frites stands and lively restaurant terraces. The municipality is home to many EU officials, embassy staff, and young professionals, giving it a cosmopolitan, international feel. Its southern edge borders the Forêt de Soignes via the Parc du Cinquantenaire. Climate matches Brussels; best visited in late spring or early autumn.

By Train

Etterbeek's main station is Etterbeek (line 161) with local trains to Brussels-Schuman (3 min), Brussels-Luxembourg (4 min), and Ottignies. The more important station is Brussels-Schuman (Thalys, domestic IC), which sits on the Etterbeek border.

By Car / Road

The Rue de la Loi and Boulevard Charlemagne cut through the north of Etterbeek, connecting to the Reyers junction and the R0 ring road. Parking is mostly paid (€1.50–2.50/hour); residents have priority zones. Avoid the area during EU summits.

Etterbeek is served by metro lines 1 and 5 (stations: Mérode, Schuman), tram lines 7, 25, 39, 44, and bus lines 22, 27, 28, 95. The commune is compact and walkable — most points are 10 minutes from Merode or Schuman. Villo! stations are available near the Cinquantenaire.
