Overview

Mahilioŭskaja voblasć (Mogilev Region) occupies the eastern part of Belarus along the Dnieper River and the Russian border. It is a region of rolling agricultural plains, dense forests, and a rich historical heritage that spans the Kyivan Rus period, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and the Russian Empire. The regional capital Mahilyow (Mogilev) is the country's third-largest city and a major industrial and cultural centre. The region is particularly notable for its 17th- and 18th-century religious architecture, including the magnificent St. Stanislaus Church in Mahilyow and the Assumption Monastery in Mstsislaw. Babruysk, the region's second city, is famous for its 19th-century fortress and a lively cultural scene. The region also has significant WWII memorials, most notably the Buinichskoye Field memorial near Mahilyow, where Soviet defenders held the German advance in 1941. The Sozh, Dnieper, and Berezina rivers define the region's geography, providing scenic river valleys and opportunities for river-based recreation.

When to Visit

May to September is the best time with warm temperatures (18–27°C) and full green landscapes. June sees the Kupalle festival celebrated across the region. July is hottest and best for river activities on the Dnieper and Sozh. September brings golden autumn colours and the harvest festival (Dazhynki). Winters (December–February) are cold (−4 to −9°C) with snow cover that can make rural roads challenging. March–April is muddy and least recommended.

Cuisine

Mahilioŭskaja voblasć shares Belarusian culinary traditions with some eastern influences from Russian border areas. Draniki (potato pancakes) are a staple everywhere. Babka (potato, egg, and pork baked in a clay pot) is a hearty speciality. Veraščaka (meat stew) is popular in Mahilyow. The Dnieper and Sozh rivers provide fresh fish — carp, pike, and zander are grilled or fried. Kolduny (stuffed dumplings) are common. Mushroom foraging is a beloved autumn activity in the region's forests. In Mahilyow and Babruysk, restaurants serve updated Belarusian cuisine alongside standard European dishes. Rural areas rely on hearty, meat-and-potato home cooking.

Culture & Festivals

Mahilyow City Day (June) features concerts and a large craft fair. Dazhynki (September harvest festival) is celebrated enthusiastically throughout this agricultural region. Babruysk Fortress Days (August) offer historical re-enactments and tours. St. George's Fair in Mstsislaw (May) is one of Belarus's oldest traditional markets. Kupalle (6–7 July) is celebrated with bonfires along riverbanks. The Mahilyow Drama Theatre stages performances year-round. Traditional crafts include pottery in Mstsislaw and Krychaw, weaving in the Sozh valley, and woodcarving.
