About Vawkavysk

Vawkavysk (Volkovysk) is one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in Belarus, first mentioned in the 11th-century chronicles. Located in western Hrodzienskaja voblasć, it has a population of about 43,000. The town's three medieval hillforts — known as the Swedish Mountain, the Castle Hill, and the Church Hill — are archaeological monuments from the early medieval period when Vawkavysk was an important fortified trade centre on the route from Kyiv to the Baltic. In the 19th century, the town developed as a railway junction and market centre. Its main attractions are the local archaeological museum, the 19th-century St. Vaclav's Church, and the well-preserved historic merchant buildings near the market square.
