About Byaroza
Byaroza (also known as Biaroza) is a small town in central Bresckaja voblasć, approximately 100 km north-east of Brest. Its main claim to fame is the ruins of the Carthusian Monastery, a once-magnificent Baroque complex that was largely destroyed when the Russian military stationed a gunpowder depot there in the 19th century and a massive explosion gutted the church. Today the imposing red-brick walls and towers are a dramatic and photogenic ruin. Byaroza also hosts a Belarusian Air Force base and military garrison, which gives the town a somewhat utilitarian feel, but the monastery ruins alone make it worth a brief stop.
