Sunamganj

Sunamganj is a district town in the Sylhet Division of Bangladesh, situated in the haor (wetland) region of the north-east. It is famous for the vast Tanguar Haor — a UNESCO Ramsar wetland site and one of the most important freshwater wetlands in South Asia. During winter, the haors attract hundreds of thousands of migratory birds from Siberia and Central Asia. The district is a paradise for birdwatchers and nature lovers.

The climate is subtropical: November–March is the best time for birdwatching and visiting the haors. April–October is the monsoon season when the haors are flooded.

The nearest airport is Osmani International Airport (ZYL) in Sylhet, about 60 km east.

By Train

Sunamganj Railway Station is on the Sylhet–Sunamganj branch line.

By Car / Road

Sunamganj is about 2 hours from Sylhet and 6 hours from Dhaka by bus.

Rickshaws and CNG autorickshaws are the main transport. For the haors, hire a boat.
