Overview

Chattogram Division (Chittagong Division) is the southeastern administrative division of Bangladesh, encompassing a diverse landscape from the world's longest natural sandy beach at Cox's Bazar to the lush green hills of the Chittagong Hill Tracts. The division is named after its capital city, Chattogram (Chittagong), which serves as Bangladesh's primary seaport and second-largest city, with a population of approximately 6.5 million. The city has been a major trading hub for centuries, flourishing on the Maritime Silk Road and serving as the eastern terminus of the Grand Trunk Road.

The division is geographically varied, featuring a long coastline along the Bay of Bengal, fertile river deltas, and the only mountainous terrain in Bangladesh in the Hill Tracts districts of Rangamati, Bandarban, and Khagrachhari. The Karnaphuli River flows through the heart of the region, with the Kaptai Dam creating one of the largest artificial lakes in Southeast Asia. The climate is tropical monsoon, with hot, humid summers (April–September) and drier, cooler winters (October–March). The region is vulnerable to tropical cyclones, with the devastating 1991 cyclone killing over 138,000 people.

Chattogram Division contributes approximately 12% of Bangladesh's national GDP and handles 80% of the country's international trade. The division's economy is driven by its port, manufacturing industries (particularly garments), shipbuilding, and a growing tourism sector centred on Cox's Bazar and the Hill Tracts.

When to Visit

The best time to visit Chattogram Division is during the winter months from November to February, when temperatures are moderate (20–28°C), humidity is lower, and rainfall is minimal. March to April can be warm but pleasant for hill district visits. The monsoon season (June–September) brings heavy rainfall that can cause flooding and disrupt travel, particularly in the Hill Tracts. Cyclone season runs from April to June and October to December, though major cyclones are infrequent. The Cox's Bazar beach season peaks from November to March. Major festivals include Eid ul-Fitr, Eid ul-Adha, and the Bengali New Year (Pohela Boishakh, April 14), which is celebrated with colourful processions throughout the division.

Getting Around

Chattogram city is the division's transport hub. Shah Amanat International Airport (CGP) connects to Dhaka (multiple daily flights), Kolkata, Kuala Lumpur, Doha, Dubai, Bangkok, and other regional cities. The Chittagong Railway Station operates trains to Dhaka (approximately 6–8 hours), Sylhet, and Mymensingh. Buses are the primary inter-city transport, with services from major operators like Green Line, Silkline, and Shohagh running frequent routes to Dhaka (6–8 hours, ৳1,200), Cox's Bazar (3–4 hours, ৳140–550), and Sylhet (7–8 hours). Within Chattogram city, rickshaws (৳20–100 for short trips), CNG auto-rickshaws, and local buses provide transport. Traffic congestion is severe, especially around Station Road and GEC Circle. BIWTC ferries operate from Sadarghat to Barisal. For the Hill Tracts, buses and shared jeeps run from Chattogram to Rangamati (77 km, 2–3 hours), Bandarban (92 km, 3–4 hours), and Khagrachhari (110 km, 3–4 hours).

Cuisine

Chattogram Division has a distinctive culinary identity within Bangladesh, with Chittagonian cuisine known for its bold, intensely spicy flavours. The signature dish is mezbani beef curry — a tremendously hot curry traditionally served at large communal feasts (mezbans) that Chittagonians are famous for hosting. The region's coastal location makes it the centre of Bangladesh's seafood industry, with fresh lobster, prawns, hilsa fish, and dried fish (shutki) widely available. In Cox's Bazar, beachfront restaurants serve grilled seafood and traditional Bangladeshi fish curries. The Hill Tracts districts offer a different culinary tradition, with bamboo-cooked chicken, indigenous rice varieties, and fermented foods unique to the tribal communities. Dried fish (shutki) is a regional specialty, with entire markets dedicated to various preparations. Street food in Chattogram includes fuchka (spiced water snacks), chotpoti, and jhalmuri. Dining is very affordable, with full meals costing ৳100–500 at local restaurants.

Culture & Festivals

Chattogram Division has a rich cultural heritage shaped by its position as a historic trading port and the meeting point of Bengali, tribal, and colonial influences. The Chittagonian language is distinct from standard Bengali and is widely spoken alongside Bengali and English. The Hill Tracts are home to numerous indigenous communities including the Chakma, Marma, Tripura, and Mro peoples, each with their own languages, traditions, and festivals. The Chakma celebration of Bizu (mid-April) and the Marma Sangrai festival are major events in the Hill Tracts. In Chattogram city, the old quarter's Portuguese heritage is visible in the churches and community of Firingis (descendants of Portuguese traders). The city is also the seat of the Bengali Buddhist priesthood. Pohela Boishakh (Bengali New Year, April 14) is celebrated with colourful processions throughout the division. The Chittagong Stock Exchange and numerous business families reflect the city's strong mercantile tradition.
