Wemyss Bight

Wemyss Bight is a settlement in BS-SE (BS-SE), Bahamas. BS-SE is the southern portion of Eleuthera island, a long, narrow island in the central Bahamas, and Wemyss Bight is one of the communities that make up the district's sparse population.

The settlement has the quiet, unhurried character typical of the Out Islands — known for the settlement of Rock Sound, the Ocean Hole, and the island's agricultural heritage. Life revolves around the sea, and the local economy is based on farming (pineapples, tomatoes), fishing, and growing tourism. The primary access to BS-SE is by air from Nassau (NAS). Flights from nassau to rock sound (rsd), or by road from central eleuthera. Road access is limited within BS-SE. Wemyss Bight can be reached by road from other settlements in the district where roads exist, but many areas are connected only by unpaved tracks. Rental cars may be available locally — arrange in advance. Driving is on the left (British convention).

Wemyss Bight is small enough to explore on foot. For getting around the wider district, you will need a rental car, golf cart, or taxi — arrange these in advance as walk-up availability is not guaranteed. There is no public transport to speak of. Roads outside settlements are often unpaved. Carrying cash for fuel and fares is essential — there are few ATMs and card acceptance is limited.

Food in BS-SE is simple, fresh, and seafood-driven — conch (cracked conch, conch salad, conch fritters), Bahamian-style fish (often snapper or grouper), and spiny lobster in season (August–March). Dining options are few and can change with the season, so confirm locally.
