About Altiagaj
Altiagaj is a small settlement in Azerbaijan's Xızı (Khizi) district, located in the semi-arid landscape between the Greater Caucasus foothills and the Caspian Sea coast, approximately 100–110 km north of Baku. The Xızı district is characterised by its distinctive steppe terrain, sparse vegetation, and dramatic geological formations. The area is known for its unique landscape, which includes the famous "Burning Mountain" (Yanar Dağ) region and semi-desert terrain that transitions from coastal lowlands to mountain foothills.
The settlement of Altiagaj sits in a landscape shaped by centuries of pastoral activity and geological forces. The Xızı region has historically been inhabited by semi-nomadic communities engaged in livestock herding and agriculture. The area remains relatively undeveloped compared to Baku and its suburbs, offering a quiet, rural Azerbaijani experience. The terrain around Altiagaj features rolling hills, dry riverbeds, and sparse woodland, with the Greater Caucasus ridgeline visible to the north.
Climate is semi-arid with hot, dry summers (30–35°C) and cool winters that can be windy. Rainfall is modest and concentrated in autumn and spring. The best time to visit is from April through June and September through October, when temperatures are pleasant for outdoor exploration. Summers can be very hot with little shade available in the open steppe landscape.

Ask on WhatsAppFood & Dining
Food options in Altiagaj are limited to basic local fare. Simple eateries in the area serve traditional Azerbaijani dishes including kebabs, plov (rice pilaf), fresh bread, and seasonal salads. The region's pastoral heritage means dairy products — yoghurt, cheese, and qurut (dried yoghurt) — feature prominently in local food culture. Lamb is the primary meat. Tea and bread accompany every meal. Visitors should carry snacks and water for excursions into the surrounding terrain, as food vendors are sparse outside the settlement centre. For more varied dining, the town of Xızı offers a wider selection.
Cafes & Nightlife
Tea (çay) is the standard drink and will be offered at any local establishment or home. Herbal teas using local mountain thyme and other steppe herbs are traditional in the Xızı region.
