Why visit?

Xızı is a rayon in northeastern Azerbaijan, situated on the eastern slopes of the Greater Caucasus mountains, approximately 100 kilometers north of Baku. The district is known for its dramatic mountain scenery, with the Altyaghaj National Park covering a significant portion of its territory. The landscape transitions from the coastal lowlands near the Caspian Sea to the forested mountain slopes of the Caucasus, creating diverse ecosystems and microclimates. The administrative center is the town of Xızı, a small settlement serving the surrounding rural communities.

The Altyaghaj National Park, established in 2004, is the district's primary natural attraction, protecting beech and hornbeam forests, alpine meadows, and a variety of wildlife including Caucasian tur, wolves, and numerous bird species. The park offers hiking trails through pristine mountain forests with waterfalls and scenic viewpoints. The climate is temperate, with cool summers (18–25°C) and cold winters with snowfall in the highlands.

Xızı is an emerging ecotourism destination, offering hiking, nature observation, and mountain scenery that contrast with the coastal and urban experiences available elsewhere in Azerbaijan.

When is the best time to visit?

The best time to visit Xızı is during late spring through early autumn (May to October), when the hiking trails are accessible and the mountain scenery is at its most vibrant. Summer temperatures in the mountains are pleasant (18–25°C), providing a cool escape from the lowland heat. Autumn brings golden foliage to the beech forests. Winters bring heavy snowfall, which can close mountain roads but offers opportunities for snowshoeing and winter photography.
