Xankəndi (also known as Stepanakert) is the largest city and administrative center of the Karabakh region of Azerbaijan, situated in the foothills of the Lesser Caucasus at an elevation of approximately 800 meters. The city serves as the regional capital and has been the focus of significant geopolitical attention due to its role in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflicts. Following the Second Nagorno-Karabakh War in 2020, the city came under Azerbaijani control and has undergone extensive reconstruction and administrative reorganization.
The city is located in a valley surrounded by forested mountain slopes, with the Tartar River flowing nearby. The climate is temperate with cool summers (20–25°C) and cold winters (-5 to 0°C with snowfall). The surrounding landscape offers mountain scenery, river valleys, and forested areas suitable for hiking and nature exploration. The municipality encompasses the city itself and its immediate environs, with a population that has fluctuated significantly due to the region's complex history.
Xankəndi is undergoing rapid transformation as Azerbaijan invests in infrastructure, housing, and cultural institutions. The city's future as a tourist destination depends on the ongoing stability and development efforts in the region.
When is the best time to visit?
The best time to visit Xankəndi is during late spring through early autumn (May to October), when temperatures are pleasant and the surrounding mountain scenery is at its most vibrant.
