Xankəndi

Xankəndi (also known as Stepanakert) is the largest city and administrative center of the Karabakh region of Azerbaijan, situated in the foothills of the Lesser Caucasus at an elevation of approximately 800 meters. The city serves as the regional capital and has been the focus of significant geopolitical attention due to its role in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflicts. Xankəndi is accessible by road from Baku (approximately 350 km, 5–6 hours) via the M2 highway and the mountain road through Horadiz. The city is also connected to Shusha (10 km), Tartar, and Agdam by road. Local transport within the city consists of taxis and walking. The city center is compact and walkable. Road access from Armenia is currently restricted. Travelers should verify current access regulations before planning a visit, as conditions may change.

Xankəndi's culinary scene is developing as the city rebuilds. Traditional Karabakh cuisine features prominently, with dishes including dolma (stuffed grape leaves and vegetables), piti (lamb and chickpea stew), and lavangi (walnut-stuffed chicken). New restaurants and cafes have opened to serve residents and visitors. The surrounding villages offer home-cooked meals featuring local produce and dairy. Vegetarian options include rice pilafs, grilled vegetables, and salads. Pork is not served; halal dietary practices are standard.
