Why visit Sugovushan?
Sugovushan is a small settlement in the Tərtər District of Azerbaijan, best known for the nearby Sugovushan Reservoir situated at the foothills of the Lesser Caucasus. The area has a strategic position along the Tartar River and was significantly affected by the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, changing hands between Armenian and Azerbaijani control before being recaptured by Azerbaijan in 2020. The name "Sugovushan" means "waterfall" in Azerbaijani.
The climate is mild continental with warm summers (22–28°C) and cool winters (0–5°C). The reservoir creates a microclimate that can be slightly cooler than the surrounding lowlands. The best times to visit are late spring (May–June) and early autumn (September), when the landscape is green and temperatures are pleasant.
Sugovushan is primarily visited for its reservoir and the surrounding hills. It is a popular weekend picnic spot for locals from Tərtər and nearby towns. The settlement itself is small and still rebuilding after the conflict years.
