Laza

Qusar, Azerbaijan

Why visit Laza?

Laza is a remote mountain village in Qusar Rayon, Northeastern Azerbaijan, perched high in the Greater Caucasus Mountains. It is one of the most popular starting points for trekkers attempting to summit Shahdag (4,243 m), Azerbaijan's highest peak. The village is almost entirely Lezgin, and traditional mountain life continues much as it has for centuries — stone houses, livestock herding, and a slow pace shaped by the seasons. Winters are harsh and snowy; summer is the only practical season for most visitors, with mild days and cool nights from June to September.

How do you get there?

By Plane

Heydar Aliyev International Airport (GYD) in Baku, approximately 220 km southeast, is the nearest major airport. From there, take a taxi or bus to Qusar town (about 3 hours), then a shared taxi or hired 4WD onward to Laza (40 minutes).

By Car / Road

From Qusar town, the road climbs 15 km northwest into the mountains toward Laza. The lower section is paved but becomes rough and narrow in the final kilometres; a 4WD vehicle is recommended after rain. Shared taxis from Qusar's central stand cost around 15–20 AZN per person.

Laza is tiny — everything is walkable within minutes. The surrounding mountain trails are accessed on foot; there are no local buses or taxis. Guided hikes can be arranged through guesthouses.

What are the things to do?

  • Shahdag views — The peak of Shahdag dominates the skyline above Laza. At sunrise the mountain glows golden, a sight that draws photographers and trekkers.

  • Traditional Lezgin stone houses — The village architecture consists of old stone-and-timber homes with distinctive flat roofs, adapted to heavy snow.

  • Mountain waterfalls — Several small waterfalls cascade down the slopes near the village, especially in late spring when snowmelt is at its peak.

  • Trek to Shahdag — Laza is the primary trailhead for the Shahdag summit attempt. The climb is challenging, requires a guide, and takes 2–3 days round trip. Bring all supplies from Qusar.

  • Hiking — Day hikes along the ridges above Laza offer panoramic views of the Caucasus range. Popular routes head toward Sudug and Gazanbulg passes.

  • Photography — The combination of traditional village life, dramatic peaks, and clear mountain light makes Laza a photographer's destination.

  • Homestay cultural experience — Spending a night with a Lezgin family offers insight into traditional cooking, music, and herding life.
