About Aniq

Aniq is a remote Lezgin mountain village in Qusar Rayon, situated high in the Greater Caucasus Mountains of northeastern Azerbaijan. Perched on a steep slope at an elevation of around 1,600 m, Aniq is one of the more isolated settlements in the rayon, accessible only by a rough mountain road that winds up from the Qusar valley. The population is small and predominantly Lezgin, maintaining traditional ways of life centred on sheep herding, subsistence agriculture, and close-knit family networks. Winters are long and severe; the village is often snowed in from December through March. The best time to visit is June to September.

How to reach

By Plane

Heydar Aliyev International Airport (GYD) in Baku, about 220 km southeast, is the nearest major airport. From Baku, travel to Qusar town by bus or taxi (3 hours), then onwards to Aniq by hired 4WD (35 minutes).

By Train

By Car / Road

A rough unpaved road climbs approximately 12 km northwest from Qusar town to Aniq. The road is passable only by high-clearance or 4WD vehicles, particularly after rain or snowmelt. A hired taxi from Qusar costs around 25–35 AZN for a round trip including waiting time.

Aniq consists of a single lane of stone houses strung along the slope. Walking is the only way to get around. Trails from the village lead into the surrounding mountains.

Things to do

  • Panoramic Caucasus views — Aniq's high perch offers sweeping views across the Qusar valley toward the main Caucasus ridge. Shahdag is visible on clear days.

  • Lezgin stone architecture — Traditional houses built from local stone with compacted earth roofs, blending into the mountain landscape.

  • Mountain springs — Cold, clear springs emerge from the slopes around the village, a vital water source for locals and livestock.

  • High-altitude hiking — The ridges above Aniq offer excellent hiking with very few other trekkers. Trails connect to the broader Qusar hiking network, including routes toward Laza and Gazanbulg.

  • Cultural immersion — Aniq sees very few foreign visitors, so a polite, respectful approach is rewarded with genuine hospitality. Many villagers are curious about outsiders and happy to share tea or stories (Russian or Lezgi is essential for communication).

  • Wildlife watching — The surrounding forests and alpine meadows are home to Caucasian tur (mountain goat), golden eagles, and foxes.
