The town lies in a broad valley along the Dashagil River, surrounded by forested mountains. Oghuz has a mixed population of Azerbaijanis, Lezgins, and Russians, reflecting the ethnic diversity of the northern Caucasus foothills.

The district is known for its dense forests (oak, hornbeam, beech), mineral springs, and apple orchards. Summers are warm (20–28°C), winters cold with snow (−2 to 5°C). The best time to visit is May–October.
