About Qizil Aghaj National Park
Qizil Aghaj National Park (also spelled Gyzylagaj) is a protected wetland reserve in Neftçala District in southeastern Azerbaijan, covering approximately 884 km² of the Kura River delta on the Caspian Sea coast. Established in 1929 as a state reserve and upgraded to a national park in 2018, it is one of the most important bird sanctuaries in the Caucasus region. The park is a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance and a key stopover on the Afro-Eurasian flyway.
The park encompasses shallow lagoons, extensive reed beds, mudflats, and open water. It hosts hundreds of thousands of migratory waterbirds, including the world's largest wintering population of flamingos in the Caspian region. Summers are hot (28–35°C), winters mild (2–8°C). The best time for birdwatching is October–March when migratory birds are present.
