Why visit?

İsmayıllı Rayon is one of Azerbaijan's most scenic and popular inland districts, straddling the Greater and Lesser Caucasus mountain ranges in the country's north-central highlands. The landscape is extraordinarily varied — dense forests, rushing rivers, alpine meadows, and traditional mountain villages create a tapestry that draws hikers, nature lovers, and cultural tourists.

The district capital, İsmayıllı, sits in a valley at around 700 m elevation, surrounded by forested mountains. The wider district includes some of Azerbaijan's most celebrated mountain villages — Lahıc, with its copper-working tradition and stone architecture, and Basqal, with its silk-weaving heritage. The area is also home to Ivanovka, one of the last remaining Russian Molokan villages in Azerbaijan.

İsmayıllı's climate varies dramatically with elevation: the valley floor has warm summers (24–30 °C) and cool winters (−2 to 5 °C), while the mountains are significantly cooler. Rainfall is moderate to high, supporting lush forests of beech, oak, chestnut, and walnut.

When is the best time to visit?

May through October is the best window. Spring (May–June) brings wildflowers and green forests. Summer (July–August) is warm in the valleys and pleasant at altitude. Autumn (September–October) offers spectacular foliage. Winter (November–March) brings snow; some mountain roads close.

How do you get around?

Within the rayon, local minibuses connect the capital to larger villages. A private car or taxi is essential for reaching Lahıc, Basqal, and other mountain villages — roads are paved but narrow and winding. Taxis within the district cost 5–15 AZN.

What should you eat?

İsmayıllı's cuisine reflects its mountain setting and diverse communities. Piti (slow-cooked lamb stew) is the signature dish. Fresh trout from mountain rivers is served grilled with herbs. Ivanovka is known for its dairy products — cheese, butter, and sour cream from communal farms. Local honey, walnuts, and dried fruits are produced throughout the district. Basqal has a tradition of herbal teas. Meals in guest houses and restaurants cost 8–15 AZN.

What is the culture like?

İsmayıllı is culturally rich. Lahıc's coppersmiths produce decorative plates, jugs, and trays using techniques unchanged for centuries. Basqal's silk-weaving produces traditional kelaghayi (headscarves). Ivanovka preserves Russian Molokan songs, dances, and communal traditions. Novruz, the Lahıc Copper Festival, and various mountain culture events are highlights. Ashiq music is performed in tea houses.
