Goranboy Rayon is a district in west-central Azerbaijan, situated on the northern edge of the Karabakh region. The landscape transitions from flat agricultural lowland in the east to hilly terrain in the west, where the foothills of the Lesser Caucasus begin. The district was affected by the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict — parts of the western area were under Armenian control from 1993 until the 2020 war — and the experience of conflict and return shapes the district's contemporary identity.
The district capital, Goranboy, is a small town with a central bazaar, tree-lined streets, and a relaxed provincial atmosphere. The surrounding agricultural land produces wheat, cotton, grapes, and livestock. The western hills offer scenic landscapes and cooler temperatures. The district is also known for the Tatar River (Tərtərçay), which flows through its territory.
Climate is continental — hot summers (30–36 °C) in the lowlands, cooler in the hills (24–30 °C), and cold winters (−2 to 5 °C). Rainfall is moderate, concentrated in spring.
When to Visit
April through June and September through October are ideal, with comfortable temperatures and green landscapes. Summer is hot in the lowlands but manageable in the hills. Winter is cold, with snow possible at higher elevations. Novruz (around 21 March) is celebrated across the district.
