Biləsuvar Rayon is a southern district in Azerbaijan, bordering Iran along the Araz River. The landscape is flat and agricultural, part of the Mugan Plain — one of Azerbaijan's most productive farming regions. Cotton, wheat, rice, and livestock are the economic mainstays. The district capital, Biləsuvar, is a small town that serves as a border crossing point and regional market centre.
The Araz River, which forms the international border with Iran, is the district's defining geographical feature. The river valley is fertile and intensively farmed, while areas further from the river are drier and used for grazing. The district has a frontier character — the Iranian border is a constant presence, and cross-border trade and cultural exchange have shaped local life for centuries.
Climate is semi-arid continental with very hot summers (34–40 °C), mild winters (2–8 °C), and low rainfall concentrated in spring. The flat, open landscape offers dramatic skies and wide horizons.
When to Visit
Spring (March–May) is the best season, with green fields, comfortable temperatures (15–25 °C), and the Araz River at its fullest. Autumn (September–October) is also pleasant. Summer is extremely hot and uncomfortable for outdoor activities. Winter is cold but dry. Novruz (around 21 March) is celebrated enthusiastically in border communities.

WhatsAppCuisine
Biləsuvar's cuisine reflects its southern location and proximity to Iran. Rice dishes are prominent — the Mugan Plain produces much of Azerbaijan's rice, and plov variations here are distinctive. Grilled fish from the Araz River is a local specialty. Herbs — tarragon, basil, mint — are used generously. Samosa (qutab-style pastries filled with meat or herbs) and dolma are everyday dishes. The border influence brings Iranian-style tea culture and sweet preparations. Meals in local restaurants cost 4–8 AZN.
Culture & Festivals
The district's border position creates a blended cultural identity. Novruz is the biggest celebration, with traditions shared across the Iranian border. Local music features both Azerbaijani ashiq traditions and Iranian-influenced melodies. Wedding celebrations are elaborate, sometimes lasting several days with traditional dance and feasting. The bazaar is the social hub, where cross-border goods and local produce mingle.
