About Swan Hill

Swan Hill is a city of around 11,000 on the south bank of the Murray River in the Murray region of northwest Victoria. It is a relaxed country centre full of charm, with interesting cultural and historic attractions but without the crowds of a larger regional city. The town is best known for the Pioneer Settlement, an open-air recreation of a 19th-century river-port community, and for its riverside setting amid productive farming and irrigation country.

The Swan Hill area is the traditional land of the Wemba-Wemba and Wati-Wati peoples, who have lived here for at least 9,000 years; the Wemba-Wemba name for the town is "Matakupaat" (place of the platypus). In Aboriginal tradition the Murray River itself was formed by the thrashing of a giant cod. The town's English name comes from the explorer Thomas Mitchell, who camped beside a hill here in June 1836 and was kept awake by swans.

Swan Hill has a hot, dry climate — summers are very hot, while spring and autumn are mild and the best times to visit. The centre is small and easily walked.

How to reach

By Plane

The main gateway is Melbourne Airport (MEL), serving domestic and international flights, with onward travel by train, coach or car. The regional airport at Mildura (MQL) connects to several cities but flights can be pricey, with bus access onward to Swan Hill. Swan Hill Aerodrome (SWH, Back Boga Road, ~3 km south of town) is a council-run airfield with no scheduled services.

By Train

Swan Hill is the northern terminus of the Swan Hill V/Line line, served twice daily from Melbourne's Southern Cross. The journey takes about 4.5 hours and requires a reservation and paper ticket (Myki is not valid past Eaglehawk). The line uses older N-class trains rather than the standard VLocity fleet, and reliability issues mean services are sometimes replaced by coaches from Bendigo.

By Car / Road

The Murray Valley Highway connects Swan Hill to Mildura, Kerang, Echuca and Albury-Wodonga. Melbourne is about 3.5 hours away via Bendigo (Calder Freeway) and Kerang (Loddon Valley Highway). V/Line coaches also serve the town, including the daily Mildura–Albury-Wodonga service (passing around lunchtime) and a Mildura–Ballarat loop; reservations are required.

The centre of Swan Hill is small and easily navigated on foot. A car is useful for reaching the riverside attractions and surrounding district, and there is a taxi service in town.
