Maldon

Victoria, Australia

Why visit Maldon?

Maldon is a small gold-rush town of about 1,500 people in the Goldfields region of central Victoria, around 140 km northwest of Melbourne and nestled on the slopes of Mount Tarrengower. It is renowned for its exceptionally well-preserved historic streetscapes — in 1965 the National Trust of Australia declared it Australia's "First Notable Town," recognising the intactness of its 19th-century main street and cottages.

The township and surrounding forests are full of reminders of the gold-mining past: mine ruins, poppet heads and old workings, alongside seasonal wildflowers and a network of comfortable scenic walking trails. The slow pace, antique shopfronts and steam railway give Maldon a strong period charm that draws day-trippers and weekenders.

Spring and autumn are the most pleasant seasons; summers are hot and dry and winters cold. The compact centre means most of the town can be enjoyed on foot.

How do you get there?

By Car / Road

From Melbourne, take the Calder Freeway (M79) and turn off onto the Pyrenees Highway (B180), follow it through Castlemaine, then turn onto the Castlemaine–Maldon Road (C282). From Daylesford, take the Midland Highway (A300) and follow the signs via Newstead. V/Line coaches on the Bendigo–Ballarat route stop in town.

Maldon's compact centre makes walking the easiest way to explore. Outlying spots such as Mount Tarrengower and the district wineries need a car or bicycle.
