Mansfield

Why visit Mansfield?

Mansfield is a country town in the High Country of northeast Victoria, about two to two and a half hours' drive from Melbourne. It is the main gateway to the Mount Buller and Mount Stirling alpine resorts and to the broader High Country, making it a year-round base — snow sports in winter, and bushwalking, mountain biking, fishing, horse riding and watersports on nearby Lake Eildon the rest of the year.

The surrounding country is classic "Man from Snowy River" cattle-and-mountain landscape, and Mansfield trades on that heritage alongside a growing reputation for food, wine and produce. The town itself is a relaxed rural centre with a wide main street, serving both farming districts and the steady flow of visitors heading to the mountains and the lake.

Winters are cold with snow on the surrounding peaks; summers are warm and dry. The Mansfield Visitor Information Centre (175 High St, ☏ +61 3 5775 7000, 10AM–4PM) is the place to pick up maps and alpine-road information.

How do you get there?

By Car / Road

The main way in is by car — about 2 to 2.5 hours from Melbourne, typically via the Maroondah Highway (B300) through the Yarra Valley and Yea, then the B320 to Mansfield. V/Line coach services connect Mansfield with the rail network. In winter, check road and chain conditions before driving up to Mount Buller.

A car is the most practical way to get around Mansfield and reach the surrounding mountains, lake and wineries. The town centre is walkable. In the snow season, shuttle and bus services run between Mansfield and Mount Buller.
