Maryborough
Victoria, Australia
Why visit Maryborough?
Maryborough is a large town of around 7,900 people in the Central Goldfields region of Victoria. Settled in 1840, it boomed after gold was discovered nearby in 1854, and the wealth of that era left it with grand public buildings — most famously its enormous railway station, which Mark Twain reportedly described as "a railway station with a town attached." Today Maryborough is a quiet regional centre best known for its gold-rush heritage and for hosting an annual Highland Gathering, reflecting the district's strong Scottish settler roots.
The town sits amid the box-ironbark forests of the goldfields, which are dotted with old workings, wildflowers in spring and walking trails. The surrounding district was the scene of some of the richest alluvial finds in Victoria, including the area near where the famous 69 kg "Welcome Stranger" nugget was unearthed.
Summers are hot and dry, winters cold; spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons. The Central Goldfields Visitor Information Centre (cnr Alma & Nolan Sts, ☏ +61 3 5460 4511, 9AM–5PM daily) is the best first stop, with maps, brochures and a scale model of the Welcome Stranger nugget.
