Hamilton
Victoria, Australia
Why visit Hamilton?
Hamilton is the principal town of the Western District of Victoria, a prosperous regional centre set amid some of the state's richest grazing country. Long styling itself the "Wool Capital of the World," Hamilton grew on the back of the surrounding sheep stations and retains a solid civic heart of grand public buildings, broad streets and parkland. Today it serves a wide farming hinterland and acts as a hub for travellers exploring the Western District's volcanic plains, lakes and the southern Grampians.
The town has a strong cultural side for its size, anchored by the well-regarded Hamilton Gallery, and is surrounded by reminders of the region's volcanic past — extinct volcanoes, crater lakes and lava plains. It also sits within reach of the wildlife haven of the surrounding bushland and the dramatic southern Grampians at Dunkeld.
The climate is cool-temperate, with mild summers and cold, damp winters; spring and autumn are pleasant. The Visitor Information Centre (86 Hamilton Place, ☏ +61 1800 807 056, daily 9AM–5PM) is the best first stop.
