About Daylesford
Daylesford is a spa and wellness town in the Goldfields region of central Victoria, about an hour and a half northwest of Melbourne. It sits in lush, hilly country and is famous for having the highest concentration of natural mineral springs in Australia, which together with its neighbour Hepburn Springs forms the spa heart of the state. The town is known for good food and wine, a strong community of artists and holistic therapists, and a relaxed weekend-getaway atmosphere.
The traditional owners of the area are the Dja Dja Wurrung people. Daylesford grew during the gold rush but reinvented itself around its mineral waters and creative community. It is affectionately known as the rainbow capital of regional Victoria for its long history of support for the LGBTQIA+ community, and it hosts one of the country's best-known regional pride festivals, ChillOut, each Labour Day long weekend.
The town is set on steep hills around Lake Daylesford. Spring and autumn are pleasant; winters are cold and misty, which suits the spa-and-fireside mood, while summers are warm and good for lake walks and gardens.

By Plane
By Train
By Car / Road
Driving is by far the easiest way to reach Daylesford — about 1 hour 20 minutes from central Melbourne via the Western Freeway, then following the signs into town. By public transport, V/Line coaches reach Daylesford from Castlemaine, Ballarat or Woodend, but there is only one stop in town and most sights are far apart, so a car (or pre-booked transfers) makes a visit far easier.
The town centre is small and easily walkable, but Daylesford is steep, so cycling can be hard going and getting to sights outside the centre — the bathhouses, Lake Daylesford's far shore, mineral-spring taps — really needs a car or bike.
Things to do
- Convent Gallery (7 Daly St, ☏ +61 3 5348 3211) — A multi-storey art exhibition in a restored 19th-century mansion that was once a convent, set on a hill with views over town. Open seven days except some public holidays. Admission around $5.
- Lake Daylesford — A pretty lake right by the town centre, popular for walks, picnics and quiet time, with multiple access points and lakeside cafés.
- Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens (Stanhope Street) — Historic hilltop gardens listed on the Victorian Heritage Register, with mature trees, a lookout tower and a garden café.
- Stony Creek Gallery (10 Stony Creek Road, ☏ +61 3 5348 1884) — A private collection of contemporary artwork available to buy. Free entry.
Daylesford is one of the most famous spa destinations in Victoria, and soaking in the mineral waters is the main reason many people come. There are several bathhouses, with the Hepburn Bathhouse and Spa (in neighbouring Hepburn Springs) and The Lake House among the best known; many also offer accommodation and treatment packages.
- Taste the mineral springs — Numerous public taps around the town and at Hepburn Springs let you taste or fill a container with naturally carbonated mineral water for free. The water is tested but essentially untreated, so drink with that in mind.
- Ghost tour at The Convent (7 Daly St, ☏ +61 3 5348 3211) — An evening tour of the historic convent building, around $45 including wine and coffee.
- Hepburn Lagoon Rides (60 Telegraph Rd, Mount Prospect, ☏ +61 408 059 125) — Horse riding from 2 to 5 hours depending on experience, from around $80.
- Mount Franklin (Lalgambuk) — An extinct volcano and historically important site; since 2025 it has been on Australia's tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage as part of the goldfields nomination.
