Loṙi (Lori) is a province in northern Armenia, bordering Georgia. It is one of the most scenic and historically rich regions of the country, characterised by the deep Debed Canyon, forested mountains, and important medieval monasteries. The provincial capital is Vanadzor, Armenia's third-largest city, set in a valley surrounded by green mountains.
The region's main draw is the Debed Canyon, a dramatic gorge lined with villages and monasteries including Haghpat and Sanahin (both UNESCO World Heritage Sites). The landscape is verdant and cool, with a more continental climate than the rest of Armenia. The region has a strong tradition of carpet-weaving and woodwork.
When to Visit
Late spring (May–June) and early autumn (September–October) are best. Summers are pleasant (20–25°C), winters are cold and snowy. The monasteries are accessible year-round but the mountain roads can be difficult in winter.
