Overview

Erevan (Yerevan) is the capital of Armenia and the country's undisputed political, cultural, and economic heart. Situated along the Hrazdan River in the Ararat Plain, flanked by Mount Ararat on the horizon, Erevan is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world — its origins trace to the Erebuni fortress founded in 782 BC. Today it is a vibrant metropolis of over a million residents and the largest Armenian community anywhere on Earth.

The city is compact and walkable, centred on Republic Square with its pink tufa buildings and dancing fountains. The Cascade complex, the Matenadaran manuscript museum, the Genocide Memorial, and the lively cafés of the centre make Erevan a rewarding destination for several days. The climate is dry continental — hot summers, cold winters, and pleasant spring and autumn.

When to Visit

Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–November) are ideal. Summers are hot (35°C+). Winters are cold but dry. The city is lively year-round.
