Nagol
Sant Julia de Loria, Andorra
About Nagol
Nagol is a very small hamlet in Sant Julià de Lòria parish, Andorra, set on a steep south-facing slope at about 1,170 m, ~3 km east of Sant Julià town up a narrow signposted side road. The permanent population is in the low dozens — Nagol is essentially a cluster of farmsteads and the parish's smallest quart — but the hamlet carries an outsized place in Andorran heritage as the location of Sant Cerni de Nagol, one of the country's most architecturally important Romanesque churches.
The church, built in the mid-11th century (a foundation stone is dated 1055), is a tiny single-nave Romanesque building distinguished by its rare pre-Romanesque painted plinths and capitals — fragments of an unusual decorative pre-Romanesque programme of geometric and zoomorphic figures painted in iron-red on the lower interior walls. It is one of the oldest surviving churches in Andorra. The setting is equally striking: the church sits on a rocky outcrop with sweeping views down the Gran Valira valley toward Spain.
Best time to visit: late spring through early autumn; access roads can be icy in winter.

Things to do
Església de Sant Cerni de Nagol — One of the oldest and most important Romanesque churches in Andorra (1055 foundation stone), with rare painted pre-Romanesque plinths in iron-red geometric and zoomorphic motifs. Tiny single-nave building, a rectangular apse, and a small bell-cot. Modest entry fee or free depending on the day; guided visits in season through the Patrimoni Cultural of Andorra.
Viewpoint terrace beside the church — One of the best long-view photo spots in the south of Andorra, looking down the Gran Valira valley toward La Margineda and Sant Julià.
Traditional core — Handful of stone-and-slate houses and bordes.
Visit Sant Cerni de Nagol — Allow 30–45 min for the church visit; combine with the viewpoint.
Heritage day combining Nagol with the Tobacco Museum and Sant Julià parish church — Half-day cultural itinerary.
Walk the trail up toward Certers and the wider parish high pastures.
Photograph the church and viewpoint at sunset — Strong south light works particularly well.
